Innovative Airway Management: LUHFT Practitioners Develop LEAFix, a Game-Changing Surgical Device
Two Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) from LUHFT are revolutionizing airway management in operating theatres with the creation of an innovative new device: LEAFix, a single-use airway securing solution.
In February 2014, Matt Cullinane and Rob Brothwood embarked on developing a device to replace the traditional use of surgical tape for securing patients' airway tubes during surgery.
Matt explained, “While continuing our work at LUHFT, we recognized the need for a more effective solution for securing airway tubes during procedures. With our combined experience, we knew the current method using surgical tape had its shortcomings, so we decided to create a product better suited for the task.”
Despite the availability of several airway securing products in intensive care settings, their research revealed a gap in the market for surgery-specific solutions. This realization led Matt and Rob to start sourcing materials and developing prototypes.
“It took us 10 years to refine the product, ensuring it was both cost-effective for the NHS and capable of standardizing the process of securing airway tubes during surgery,” Matt said. “We also wanted to make it user-friendly, particularly for staff in training who often find it challenging to master the use of surgical tape. Our goal was to create a product that staff could confidently use to secure an airway every time.”
Once the final design was completed, the team collaborated with LUHFT's Research and Innovation department and other key teams to bring the product to market.
“The support from LUHFT was instrumental in our LEAFix innovation journey,” Matt noted. “We decided to license the intellectual property to Pentland Medical, a commercial partner with experience in similar products. Pentland Medical has since secured distributor partners across Europe, the USA, and Brazil.”
With FDA approval, LEAFix will soon be available globally and is expected to be part of the NHS supply chain before the end of 2024.
Rob added, “LEAFix is versatile, designed for use with over 30 different airway devices in various surgical positions. We aimed to create the ultimate airway securing device, and we believe we’ve achieved that. The product's foam material and adhesive are gentle on all skin and hair types, ensuring patient comfort.”
“LEAFix was designed, developed, and tested in-house at LUHFT, showcasing the power of innovation from those who work closely with patients every day. I encourage anyone with an idea to engage with the Innovation team at LUHFT, who can provide the support needed to bring ideas to life.”
Dr. Andrew Rose, Assistant Director of Innovation, commented, “It’s rare for NHS Trust staff to develop new technologies, but Rob and Matt, along with other colleagues, have successfully created LEAFix to benefit patients in Liverpool and worldwide.
